Children & Families Project
Our Children & Families Project was set up in 2008 and provides low cost activities that help local children to have fun, stay safe, be healthy, learn and thrive! We also help parents/carers in Newham to form positive social networks and access support in order to build their resilience, tackle isolation, improve mental health and strengthen community connection.
In addition to our regular activity groups detailed below, our team have been running a social enterprise childcare service called 'BDCA After School Club' since 2012. This OFSTED-registered service was rated 'Good' at our last inspection in February 2018 and provides working parents with an affordable childcare solution, creates employment opportunities for local residents and helps sustain our community work so we can continue supporting families in need.
We are extremely grateful to the Henry Smith Foundation for enabling our Project Coordinators to stay in post and continue delivering this valuable project until 2022!
Regular activities that we run for local families (during school term time only):
FREE Cheeky Chimps Play and Learn - Give your toddlers a fun start to the week at our parent-led Under 5s playgroup at The Well on Monday mornings from 9:30 -11:30am. The group also supports parent/carers through a massage station and trained breastfeeding and mental health peer supporters.

- 'Go Wild' summer playschemes for 8-14 year olds during the school holidays
Free family support services:
Growing Strong: Thanks to funding from BBC Children in Need, BDCA were able to launch a new programme of free support services for local children at risk of hunger and poverty in 2017. Click here for more information about what is on offer and how you can refer children in need to this service.
Parent peer support: Our team have been trained by Newham NCT to offer both breastfeeding peer support and perinatal mental health peer support during our 3 toddler groups. However you choose to feed your baby, it can sometimes feel like a struggle and many mothers experience anxiety and low mood so our team are very happy to have honest chats within our non-judgmental safe space.
KidsBank: Keeping fast-growing children kitted out with the right size clothes is a serious stress for parents on low incomes. We organise a swap shop recycling scheme where families can give and/or get decent quality secondhand uniform, school equipment and football boots on Fridays 9.30- 11.00 during our Tots Haven sessions at The Well Community Centre.
